HEALTH TIP: Routine dental examinations, X-rays are a must

Why is it important to have routine examinations and X-rays at dental cleaning appointments?
Most dental patients understand the importance of maintaining healthy teeth and gums. However, not everyone sees the value of a periodic examination by the dentist or regular interval radiographs if they aren’t in pain.

To fully understand why a routine exam by your dentist is important, first you should consider what a routine checkup involves. The exam generally covers five main categories:
1. Oral cancer screening — Generally, this is the most important part of the exam. In many cases, oral cancer lesions can be present without any symptoms, and to an untrained eye may not be readily detected.
2. Radiographic examination — Appropriate radiographs are taken depending upon each individual’s specific needs, although most patients will have routine bitewing x-rays every two years.
3. Periodontal evaluation — The radiographs show both cavities and stability of the bone around the teeth. Using what we see on the x-rays as well as clinical findings, we make sure your gums and bone are healthy.
4. Tooth structure check — In addition to identifying cavities, we look individually at each tooth to make sure there are no signs of wear, large fillings that may be defective, or incorrect biting forces, which can lead to tooth cracking or fracture.
5. Patient concerns — Lastly this exam is a time for you to express any concerns you may have with your oral health so we can come up with a plan together.
