BRUNSWICK — First Light Camera Club ends its summer hiatus and reconvenes for a new season of programs and activities starting Thursday, Sep. 6.
The club meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at its new location, the Brunswick Naval Museum and Memorial Gardens, 179 Admiral Fitch Ave.
The club encourages beginning through experienced photographers to join the group for another full year of learning and sharing. The program Sept. 6 will be “Best Shot,” a slideshow of images provided by club members who have been taking photos all summer long, but especially, for the club, two themes: “waterfalls” and a mystery topic selected last May by a card. Members will show the best shot they’ve taken of these themes, and it’s a good opportunity to see the work of several photographers.
First Light Camera Club has been around since the 1990s and meets weekly on Thursday evenings (except for holidays) from September through May. An annual membership of $40 offers access to workshops, photo outings, image critiques, guest speakers and tech nights all season long. Upcoming photo outings include a trip to Boston (Saturday, Sept. 8) and a gathering to photograph Portland’s skyline at twilight (Wednesday, Sept. 29).
This year, educational programming has been divided by photo topics: September will be “color and composition,” October “Fall and Winter Landscapes,” November “Long Exposure and Seascapes,” December “Christmas and Christmas Lights,” January “Macro,” February “Processing,” March “Nature,” April “Nights, Milky Way, Time Lapses, and more,” and finally, in May, “People.” Programs include speakers, field trips, hands-on matting and framing, discussions (“What is Real Nature Photography?”), group critiques, and model shoots.
The club provides learning opportunities and a chance to learn with local residents, beginning and advanced photographers, and friendly people.
Separately, Capital Area Camera Club is hosting a workshop with “Nikon Legend” photographer Tony Sweet on from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday Oct. 17, at the Viles Arboretum in Augusta. For fee, registration and more information check the group’s website.
Those interested in learning more about First Light Camera Club are encouraged to attend a meeting to get to know the group. People interested may attend two meetings that do not involve a guest speaker for free. Members may also participate in Project 52, an activity encouraging club members to shoot to a different theme every week of the year and to post images to Facebook for feedback and comments. Members may receive professional critiques of images by posting to the “See the Light” Facebook page. Members’ photographic work is eligible to be included in occasional exhibitions at area galleries and exhibit venues.
