PORTLAND — From community-service and member education to financial education for youth and financial education for adults, Maine Credit Unions have a long and storied history of helping members and communities. For those efforts, 11 Maine CUs were recognized with the Maine CU League’s annual State Awards during the League’s Annual Meeting on Friday, May 18.
Five local credit unions received the following awards, listed alphabetically:
Central Maine FCU of Lewiston and Auburn, received four awards including a second-place Desjardins Adult Financial Education Award, an Honorable Mention Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award, an Honorable Mention Dora Maxwell Community-Service Award, and an Honorable Mention Louise Herring Member Education Award;
Community CU of Lewiston, with branches in Auburn and Turner, received four awards including a first-place Desjardins Adult Financial Education Award, an Honorable Mention Dora Maxwell Community Service Award, and an Honorable Mention Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award;
Dirigo FCU of Lewiston, with branches in Auburn, Mechanic Falls and South Paris, received a second-place Louise Herring Member Education Award;
Five County CU, with local branches in Auburn, Lewiston and Lisbon, received a first-place Louise Herring Member Education Award and a first place Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award;
Oxford FCU of Mexico and Norway, received a first-place Dora Maxwell Community-Service Award.
A total of 22 awards were presented with several CUs receiving multiple awards. All first-place winners will now move on to compete in the national competition, coordinated by the Credit Union National Association, in the fall.
“Maine credit unions have a long history of making a difference not only in the lives of their members but in their community, as well. These awards represent some of the positive initiatives that Maine CUs make every day, not because they have to but because it’s part of who credit unions are – member-owned, financial cooperatives,” said Jon Paradise, vice president of public affairs and engagement for the Maine Credit Union League. A Maine CU has received at least one national award in the national competition in 15 out of the past 19 years.
Formed in 1938, the Maine Credit Union League is the state trade association for Maine’s 55 credit unions and nearly 700,000 members, committed to helping credit unions succeed and improve the financial lives of their members.
