GREENE — The library’s Summer Reading Program for kids and teens up to age 17 provides small prizes for those who keep a list of books they read during summer vacation.
The library is also taking part int he ReadME 2018 for adults this summer.
In the teen summer program, after reading three books, participants may choose a Portland Sea Dogs ticket or an ice cream cone at Main Street Dairy Treat; after six books, they may choose a Portland Sea Dogs ticket or a new book to keep from the library’s prize cart; and after 10 books, they receive an ice cream sundae from Main Street Dairy Treat and are entered into the drawing for the grand prize, a $25 gift card at the bookstore of their choice.
Participants should sign up at the library from June 21 through July 7; all prizes should be picked up by Aug. 18.
New for this year at Morse Library, ReadME 2018 is a statewide summer reading program for adults presented by Maine libraries, in partnership with the Maine Humanities Council and the Maine State Library. Participants are invited to read one or both of this year’s ReadME selections, recommended by bestselling Maine author Paul Doiron.
They are CB Anderson’s “River Talk,” a collection of short stories about contemporary life in the historic river towns of western Maine, and Susan Hand Shetterly’s “Settled in the Wild: Notes from the Edge of Town,” a collection of lyrical short essays about the natural world that, at least in Maine, still exists just beyond many of our back yards.
Morse Library will host a book discussion about “River Talk” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 24,. and one about “Settled in the Wild” on at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14. MPBN’s “Maine Calling” radio program will broadcast a live discussion of both books from the Maine State Library in Augusta on Aug. 22 or 23. There is no need to sign up for the program or the discussions. Copies of the books are available to borrow at the library.
