HALLOWELL – Gov. Paul LePage has issued a roclamation declaring June 4 through 10 Tourism Employee Recognition Week, at the request of the Maine Tourism Association.
“We are one of Maine’s largest industries and our workers deserve great respect for that. They are the reason the 36 million visitors who come here each year receive exceptional service and hospitality,” said Chris Fogg, CEO of the Maine Tourism Association.
“Our goal is for residents and visitors to take a minute to thank the hospitality workers they encounter and keep in mind how important they are to Maine and its economy.”
This is the first year that MTA has requested a proclamatio, but the association hopes that it will become an annual recognition, Fogg said.
“We know that the workers in this industry don’t always get as much credit as they deserve, not only on an individual basis but as part a crucial part of Maine’s economy,” Fogg said. “Tourism isn’t just jobs, it’s careers. We want the Maine residents, visitors and government officials to recognize that.”
Tourism supports nearly 107,000 jobs in Maine, tourism expenditures equals over $6 billion annually and the industry brings in $600 million in taxes.
The Maine Tourism Association represents over 1,500 members from a full range of tourism businesses including restaurants, lodging establishments, camps and campgrounds, retail, amusements, and guides and other services.
