WAYNE — Cary Memorial Library, 17 Old Winthrop Road, will host Earle Shettleworth Wednesday, June 6, at 6:30 p.m. Shettleworth served as the director of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission for decades and as Maine’s State Historian since 2004.
His latest book, “Maine in World War I,” describes how more than 35,000 Mainers joined the armed forces in 1917-1918 to fight with America’s European allies against Germany. The book is co-authored by Jason C. Libby.
This is an opportunity to learn how Maine citizens provided vital support to the U.S. and its allies through war-related industries such as shipbuilding, munitions, textiles and agriculture. The war may have been “over there,” but its effects were experienced throughout the state.
