BUSINESS PROFILE: Maine perennials bloom at Monmouth’s Our Funny Farm

May. 112018

MONMOUTH – Our Funny Farm is open again for the season.
Started last year by Don and Hollis Smith of Monmouth, the perennial business is already growing with new varieties being added all the time.

The best part of shopping at Our Funny Farm is that all the perennials are priced at only $5 each, which is less expensive than even the big box stores.
The Smiths have close to 150 varieties available, including shade-lovers, sun-lovers, tall plants, and varieties that are perfect for rock gardens. In addition to the many large and small flowering plants, the Smiths also have many edible species such as rhubarb, raspberries, horseradish, and herbs like oregano, lemon balm, and mints.
“Our strategy is to grow as many varieties from seeds as we can,” Don Smith shared, “and we divide our field grown ones. Each year we start new species from seeds and let them grow for a year before we pot them up. All our plants have wintered over in Maine, so you can be sure they are hardy plants that will grow here. We have very little overhead, so we can keep our prices low.”
Our Funny Farm is a hobby business for the busy couple who both have full-time jobs.
This year, Our Funny Farm has expanded its native plant selection with varieties rescued from various spots that were destroyed by construction. They have beautiful woodland species like wild ginger and bloodroot, as well as a selection of ferns. If you know of a woodland area where a house is being constructed or logging may disrupt plants, Don and Hollis would be happy to rescue as many rare or unusual plants as possible.
Our Funny Farm is at 19 Anderson Road and is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and on other days by chance or appointment. Visit www.ourfunnyfarm.com or call 207-649-4700.
