AUGUSTA — The Maine State Library has been selected by the Maine Humanities Council to offer “Let’s Talk About It,” a free book reading and discussion group.
The program runs from May through July, and copies of the books will be available through the library.
The program is provided by the Maine Humanities Council’s Maine Center for the Book in cooperation with the Maine State Library. The programs are on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. in the Maine State Library Studio on the third floor, and will last for about 90 minutes. Candace Kanes, independent historian and museum curator, will facilitate the discussions.
The first meeting of the series, “Defining Wilderness: Defining Maine,” is Tuesday, May 29, at the Maine State Library, with “The Maine Woods,” by Henry David Thoreau.

June 12: “The Wilderness from Chamberlain Farm,” By Dean B. Bennett. June 26: “Fly Rod Crosby” by Earle G. Shettleworth and Julia A. Hunter, as well as “Diary of a Moosehead Lake Trip,” by John W.G. Dunn and “Down the Allagash,” by Henry L. Withee. July 10: “Camp Fires Rekindled,” by George S. Kephart July 24: “We Took to the Woods,” by Louise Dickinson Rich.
“Exploring ideas and issues through literature has a unique and fun way of creating community,” said Nicole Rancourt, director of “Let’s Talk About It.” “We find that there is great interest among adults in getting together to discuss what they’ve read with others,” she said. “Having a discussion leader like Candace Kanes who is both excited about the readings and skilled in facilitating can help to deepen this experience.”
