T.C. Hamlin students, families eat healthy at Family Cooking Night

RICHMOND — T.C. Hamlin Elementary School students and their families were invited to join school staff, staff from Healthy Communities of the Capital Area, and community members for a Family Cooking Night on April 4.
FoodCorps service member Danielle Klimcsak and T.C. Hamlin staff organized the event with the intent to highlight the positive impact of preparing and eating nutritious meals with children.

Participants had the opportunity to work at stations to prepare different components of a meal. Kitchen Manager Pat Butler and District Nutrition Director Linda Sergent were instrumental in providing access to the school kitchen and sharing their cooking expertise with guests.
Families enjoyed chopping, measuring and mixing to assemble baked macaroni and cheese, roasted broccoli and gluten-free apple crisp. The adult guests were able to experience a “store tour” from SNAP-Educator Rachael Reynolds, while students worked with Let’s Go! Coordinator Nan Bell to set the table for everyone and prepare fruit-infused water to serve alongside the meal.
During the meal, guests engaged in lively discussion prompted by Family Dinner Project “Recipes for Conversation” topics. Not only that, but Gardiner Food Co-op & Café General Manager Shawn Menard was kind enough to join everyone for the evening, and inform guests about products and resources available at the retail location nearby.
All in all, the food was delicious, the company was excellent, and both made for an enjoyable evening of family cooking.
