FEATURE COLUMN by Britny Belskis: It’s time to learn one new thing a day

Hey Friends,

As I am on the tail end of finals week, I am excited to see what is coming up next in the new year!
I can see so much possibility and wonder that 2018 will bring. For me, this year, I’m going to learn one new thing each week for the entire new year!

Why you may ask? Well, I want to engage myself in the wonders of what this world has to offer and to try things I haven’t done before. This Christmas I made DIY ornaments for my friends and family, which they loved dearly, and it was something given from the heart.

What do you want to start doing in this new year? It could be something you started and never finished or even something you have always want to do but never have. The best day to start something is today! Here are a few ways of how to start the process of starting something new. The first one we are going to look at is picking out what you want to do. For example, I am going to learn how to make my grandmother’s famous vegetable soup from scratch. When you find that special thing you want to do you can start the next phase of this journey.

Once we select what we are going to do, the next phase is to decide when you want to start this new adventure. For me, I am going to start the second week of January — Tuesday, Jan. 8. I believe deadlines are something we need in our life to successfully thrive in whatever what we do. It also gives us a timeline of what we have done and will do to stay on track in the race we need to run in this life. This leads us to our third phase enhancing our journey. Setting up a schedule will allow us to follow through the journey we are on. So, for me, this will look like opening Microsoft on my computer and formulating a schedule of what days I will start to learn to perfect the soup. When you set up that system, it will be easier to learn the new skill at hand. The fourth is motivation! Motivation is something we thrive on. I know if I’m not motivated, then I won’t do the work or I might slack on my goal. So, my motivation is that once I make the soup, my family will enjoy the special meal I made for them. How are you going to motivate yourself to reach your goal?

Last, but not least, you need to enjoy the small victories! Look back at the progress you have marked on your calendar and see how far you have come from where you were before. You are not too old or too young to learn something new; it’s never too late! Remember, you are stronger and braver then you ever will know. Until next time friends, we will talk soon!
