BRUNSWICK — The Pejepscot Genealogical Society will hold its next monthly meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8, in the Morrell Meeting Room of the Curtis Memorial Library.
Guest speaker Susan F. Beegel will discuss how Harriet Beecher Stowe’s mid-19th century novel “The Pearl of Orr’s Island: A Story of the Coast of Maine,” is not only set in the region, but was based on actual people, places, and events.
The illustrated lecture will focus on a maritime disaster — the 1849 wreck of the ship Hanover — that provides the eventful opening of Stowe’s book.
The discussion will not only cover the actual shipwreck and its fictional transformation, but how local people told the story in newspapers, letters, sermons, poems, folk art, paintings and a uniquely Victorian art form, the moving panorama. Beegel, who holds a PhD in English from Yale University, was editor of The Hemingway Review for 22 years and has published four books and more than 50 articles on aspects of 19th and 20th century American literature and history.
There will be a brief social period with refreshments before and after the speaker, and a business meeting of the genealogical society will follow.
