SOUTH PARIS — Paris Public Library will celebrate Banned Books Week — Saturday, Sept. 23, through Saturday, Sept. 30 — by inviting parents and other adults to take part in the Banned Book Challenge to help raise awareness of the content of selections in children’s literature that have shown up on banned book lists.
The month-long challenge will get underway Sunday, Sept. 24, and lasts though Oct. 24.
Participants will read books from a display that will include banned books for children, juveniles and young adults. Participants will also take home and fill out a short survey regarding their choice(s) to be returned with each book.
Participants may read as many books and submit as many surveys as they wish. Books on the list range from classics like Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” to contemporary popular books like “The Adventures of Captain Underpants,” and “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.”
Banned Books Weeks recognizes the annual celebration of the freedom to read. Public libraries honor one of the tenants of the First Amendment — Freedom of Speech — and do not ban books, organizers said. Various people and institutions, however, have chosen to generate lists of books for children, juveniles and young adults they deem inappropriate.
On Wednesday, Oct. 25, a random drawing from the surveys collected will take place.
The winner’s prize will be a $30 gift certificate to Books ‘N Things in Norway.
