West Gardiner church celebrates hall renovation with free bean supper

WEST GARDINER — After several months of dust, debris and typical construction challenges, the remodel of the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall is complete, and a free bean supper is being held to celebrate.
The supper will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19.

Built more than 150 years ago, the First Baptist Church of West Gardiner is one of the oldest churches in town, and has undergone quite a few renovations over the past century and a half, according to a news release from the church.
The original sanctuary was expanded to accommodate a growing congregation, and a function hall was added, with a kitchen, classrooms and an office. But the hall was showing its age, so a portion of the interior space was gutted, the design changed, wiring updated and new paint and carpeting added. A handicap access ramp was installed in front of the church as well.
The celebration in the “new” hall will include baked beans, brown bread and biscuits, American chop suey, homemade pie and other desserts. Everyone is welcome to share the meal, free of charge.
“As our pastor is fond of saying, ‘How do we spell fellowship? F – O – O – D !’ ”
The church is at 568 Hallowell Litchfield Road, down the road from Fuller’s Market.
