WEST GARDINER — The West Gardiner Gardeners will hold their annual garden tour and plant sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 24.
Tickets on the day of the event are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and free for children, and available at the West Gardiner Snowmobile Club/Auxiliary Hall next to the Town Office, at 314 Spears Corner Road. Proceeds from the tour fund scholarships for Gardiner Area High School graduating students from West Gardiner.
There will also be a variety of bargain-priced plants and greeting cards for sale at the West Gardiner Snowmobile Club/ Auxiliary Hall on the day of the garden tour.
This year’s tour features five gardens. Maps with directions will be provided and directional signs posted. Participants can stroll through Jean’s hosta-theme gardens, including a musical “song garden” venue or find specialty trees such as the sunburst lodgepole pine, white fringetree and Japanese umbrella pine on Don and Candy’s three-plus acres of botanical gardens with water features where frogs and turtles may be seen.
They can also ask Norm about his methods for creating a lush, eye-appealing vegetable garden and view his flower gardens, which are a lovely mix of perennial and annual favorites. Participants can also walk along Linda’s astilbe and hosta-lined path through the woods to a pond where guests are welcome to help the new property owner identify some of the many plants among the lilies and peonies. They can also try to find the 16 garden gnomes that oversee Nancy’s perennial and wildflower gardens.
The West Gardiner Gardeners was established in 2012 to promote awareness, appreciation and involvement in all aspects of gardening to all age groups, achieved through community service and scholarships. Every October, the organization sponsors a free event for children, at which they can make their own fairy gardens. Scholarship money is raised from the annual garden tour and plant sale, as well as from sales of greeting cards created by the gardeners from photos of their gardens and other subjects.
Plans are in place this year for plantings at the “Welcome to West Gardiner” signs throughout the town.
