PARIS — The Paris Public Library’s novel book club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, to discuss “The Persistent Gappers of Fripp,” by George Saunders and illustrated by Lane Smith.
The club, which meets the third Tuesday of the month, is for adults, but features children’s, juvenile and young adult selections. The “Persistent Gappers of Frip” is an illustrated tale of the Golden Rule and community kindness. According to Goodreads, it “lampoons the great American institutions of social conservatism and religious chauvinism.”
In Frip, gappers are round, bright orange, many-eyed creatures the size of baseballs that attach themselves to goats. When they do so , they make a high pitched sound and the goats of Frip will not give milk. The children of Frip have to go brush them off and toss them into the sea…but the gappers don’t stay there.
The families of Frip deliberate on ways to rid themselves of the gappers. Many ideas are self-serving. Some are not. Whose idea will work, or is their no solution? Following the discussion, the book will be read aloud by participants.
To secure a book , call the Paris Public Library at 743-6994. The library will obtain a copy on loan. Call as soon as soon as possible so time will be ample for ordering, receiving and reading. A refreshment related to the book will be served at the meeting.
Those who are not able to attend can be a “silent participant” by emailing their thoughts about the book to the children’sroom@paris.lib.me.usprior by 6 p.m. on the day of the meeting. The emails will be shared during the discussion.
