MONMOUTH — Don and Hollis Smith love to grow things! Whether it’s vegetables or perennials, herbs or wildflowers, they delight in every aspect of their gardens. From planting the seeds right through enjoying the beautiful flowers and tasty garden treats, they enjoy it all! Now Don and Hollis invite you to come visit their new garden business — Our Funny Farm.
They will be selling flowering, native and edible perennials at 19 Anderson Road. They grow a variety of both traditional and new perennials to fill your garden with beauty and color. They also sell woodland plants to fill in those shady areas of your yard with species native to Maine — plants beneficial to our local ecosystems. The edible perennials they sell range from herbs and berries to more unusual plants like walking onions. The best news is every perennial is only $5 each!
“We have talked about doing this for many years. Gardening is family tradition for me,” Don noted. “My grandfather and father both had big, beautiful flower gardens, and my sister Carla established a very successful perennial business in Searsport called Hidden Gardens. Her son, Ethan, continues to operate it. We are excited to be making our dream come true!”
Eventually, the Smiths would like to develop native display gardens and provide educational programs for identifying and growing native plants. “Growing indigenous plants provides food and shelter for native populations of birds and butterflies increasingly threatened with lack of habitat. Plants from Asia, and many hybrids, for example, are not as able to give these species what they need,” Hollis said. In this same spirit, they want to make themselves available to help people identify the native plants growing on their land and to perform rescues of rarer plants growing on land destined for development or logging. They will be adding to their inventory all summer, so be sure to stop by and check it out!
