SKOWHEGAN — Bloomfield Elementary School held a school-wide skating event, for many students their first time on ice skates, as part of Maine Outdoor Weekend on February 4. With a grant from Great Maine Outdoors Weekend, the school, which has about 300 students in grades 1-3, bought 16 pairs of skates that were used by about 40 students throught the afternoon at the Skowhegan Ice Rink, according to a news release from Great Maine Outdoor Weekend.

“At one point, all of the skates were ‘checked out’ and with other students bringing their skates, it was a bustling rink,” school officials reported in the release. “Most of the students who came to borrow the skates had never been skating and loved the opportunity to try out a new sport. Since the weekend we have had numerous children want to check out the skates at school, taking them home to enjoy the rink with their families.

“We are so grateful for the opportunity to bring a new lifelong sport to so many of our students,” school officials said in the release. Great Maine Outdoor Weekend is sponsored by the Maine Outdoor Coalition, a network of organizations and businesses that promote outdoor activities.
