AUGUSTA – Victoria Hamel, of Albany Township, was the winner of the Maine Native American History and Culture Essay Contest, Secretary of State Matt Dunlap announced recently.
Hamel, a 10th-grader at Maine Virtual Academy, received her award at the Maine State Archives in on Feb. 28, for her essay on the innovations of the Wabanaki Confederacy.
She was joined at the award presentation by state Sen. Lisa Keim, R-Oxford, who said, “I was honored to be invited to participate in the ceremony recognizing Victoria for her achievement. She should be very proud of this accomplishment.”
The contest is open to all Maine public high school and middle school students and sponsored by the Secretary of State’s office, prompted by Maine law requiring the state’s native history and culture be taught in the state’s public schools, according to the secretary of state’s office. Dunlap said in a news release announcing the winners that the essay contest is a good way for students to showcase what they’ve learned.
The middle school winner was Daniel Tibbetts, a seventh-grader at Windsor Elementary School.
