SKOWHEGAN – Nearly 30 Skowhegan Area High School students attended the first annual Student Leadership Conference on March 17 at Skowhegan Area Middle School.
The event, held by R.E.A.C.H. (Relationships Education Aspirations Community Health), a program of Maine School Administrative District 54, was designed to bring students together to share information about their clubs and build leadership skills.
“We believe that each and every one of you has the potential to make a positive impact on your school, community, and beyond,” said Danielle Denis, R.E.A.C.H. director, as she welcomed students to the event.
The morning featured student-led activities followed by presentations about each of the student clubs. Participants then heard from a panel of youth leaders involved in state-wide efforts.
“This was an amazing opportunity to hear different opinions from a range of groups and there was a sense we were all united. I like the discussion we’re having, the togetherness,” said one participant.
“We believe that by fostering a culture of leadership and community engagement, we can help our students become more successful both in and out of the classroom,” said Mark Hatch, MSAD 54 assistant superintendent.
