Author Carpenter to be Dec. 15 Lovell Speaker Series guest

LOVELL – The Hobbs Library Speaker Series will host a Zoom-only talk by Maine author William Carpenter at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15.

Carpenter’s latest book, “Silence,” won the 2022 Gold IPPY award for Military/Wartime Fiction. It is the story of Nick, a young veteran who returns from Iraq to his hometown on the coast of Maine after an IED explosion killed his crew and left him deaf. Struggling with trauma and loneliness, haunted by images of combat, Nick finds work on a private island where a wealthy family is building a resort.
Carpenter grew up in Waterville, and the first faculty member at the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, where he taught for 48 years. In 2019, the Maine State Legislature recognized Carpenter with a legislative sentiment, an honor given to Mainers for their notable achievements.
He has written three novels and three books of poetry, been awarded fellowships at both Yaddo and McDowell artist colonies and is also the recipient of the Pablo Neruda award and Black Warrior awards.
