WINTHROP – The Bookey Readings poetry series, formerly held at the Harlow Gallery in Hallowell, will now be held at Bailey Public Library, 39 Bowdoin St.
The series will kick off with Maine poets Doug Rawlings and Terry Grasse for a Veterans Day-themed reading at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12. Refreshments will be served.
Rawlings has lived in Maine since the mid-70s, teaching high school English before teaching composition and Peace Studies at the University of Maine at Farmington. In 1985, he joined with four other veterans to form the nonprofit Veterans for Peace.
Grasse was drafted into the U.S. Army at age 19. He served for one year in Vietnam as a radio operator with a military intelligence unit.
After the featured readings, local veterans and other poets attending may also share veterans-themed poetry to honor family, country and peace.
The Bookey Readings poetry series was started by Ted Bookey at the Harlow Gallery more than 25 years ago. Bookey was well known for his poetry workshops through UMA’s Senior College. Local poets Claire Hersom and Jay Franzel took over organizing the series in 2015.
