BELGRADE — The Belgrade Public Library has announced its program of special events for the summer. Books by participating authors will be available for sale and signing and most of the events, light refreshments will be served and all events are free of charge. Events are 6 to 8 p.m. at the library, 124 Depot Road, unless otherwise noted.
Author talks, children’s programs and other events through September include:
Wednesday, May 31, author K.F. Griffin talks about the real events that inspired Herman Meliville’s “Moby-Dick” and the mysteries surrounding them.
Wednesday, June 14, author John Holt Willey, shares insights into life in a Maine boatyard, where he worked and kept a journal from 1978 to ’79.
Tuesday, June 27, Mad Science of Maine’s Engineering a Better World event. This children’s program explores mechanics, including hover boards, robots and self-driving cars, and will be from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Center for All Seasons, Route 27.
Wednesday, July 5, author Delia Drake discusses her two mystery novels featuring Thea Chadworth, a quiet librarian in the small coastal town of Trafton, Maine.
Wednesday, July 12, author Bruce Robert Coffin, a former detective with the Portland Police Department, speaks about his John Byron mystery series.
Tuesday, July 18, Chewonki Biomimicry children’s program, 10 to 11 a.m. at the Center for All Seasons, explores the ways engineers have taken advantage of nature’s bright ideas through biomimicry to show how plants and animals have evolved.
Wednesday, July 26, Lee Ann and Thomas Mark Szelog discuss the way the natural world has an impact on our daily lives.
Wednesday, Aug. 2, TV weatherman Kevin Mannix and his wife, social worker Linda Rota, talk about their individual experiences with shame and stigma throughout their childhood and adult lives regarding alcoholism, depression and suicide, and their book “Weathering Shame,” which aims to ease stigma and bring awareness.
Wednesday, Aug. 9, author Mac Smith discusses his book “Mainers on the Titanic.”
Thursday, Aug. 17, Child identification program, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the library, free program by the Messalonskee Masonic Lodge providing parents with fingerprints and photographic evidence complete with a record of all identifying birthmarks in case a child becomes lost or missing.
Wednesday, Aug. 23, author Richard Rubin discusses the forgotten generation of Americans: the men and women who fought and won World War I.
Wednesday, Aug. 30, author Elizabeth Bischof discusses her program to identify and document Maine’s World War I monuments and memorials.
Wednesday, Sept. 6, author Paul Betit, talks about his newest book , “Let Me Tell A Story,” a collection of stories spanning more than 50 years inspired by his personal experiences during the Vietnam War and its aftermath, how the stories came to be, as well as the writing and publishing process.
