GARDINER – BSA Troop 672 celebrated its 90th birthday Aug. 15 by building a mini library for Christ Church Episcopal, Dresden Street, as a service project.
The Scouts and leaders also built a bottle bin behind the church to collect returnables as a way to raise money for Scout activities. The Scouts and parents and leaders then joined together for a potluck meal as a way to connect after a busy summer of Scouting activities and to celebrate 90 years of Troop 672 in Gardiner.
Scoutmaster Ryan Avery said that Scouting in Gardiner dates back to at least 1924, but 2022 marks the 90th anniversary of Troop 672. Avery said the troop has a history of service to the community.
“It’s important to teach the youth that they have a responsibility to help other people,” Avery said. “Troop 672 has been doing that for nine decades now, from food collection efforts to conservation projects. In 1932, the community purchased Christmas gifts for needy children and the Gardiner Scouts delivered them. Santa received 616 letters that year from Gardiner.”
