BRUNSWICK – The town has opened a second food waste drop-off site for residential use, at the Brunswick Recreation Center, 220 Neptune Drive (Brunswick Landing).
The site is funded in part by a waste diversion grant from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.
The goal is to increase residential food waste recycling from 200 tons a year to 400 tons, reducing the amount of waste and cost of it going into the town’s rubbish disposal stream.
This will be achieved by encouraging residents to compost at home, sign up for curbside collection service provided by Garbage to Garden, or bring food waste to one of the two drop-off sites.
The town’s Public Works Department is selling two types of home composters to help reach the goal. The price of the composters is subsidized by the Maine DEP grant and substantially lowers the cost for those who would like to begin using this method to reduce the amount of food waste that ends up in a landfill or incineration facility.
