NEWRY – The reopening of Trail’s End Restaurant and Tavern is slated for Sunday, June 4, with an addition — the Sundae River Scoops ice cream bar and seafood grill.
Owners Jen and Dean Weeks, who took over the former Phoenix House and Well last fall, said they had a successful winter serving the ski crowd. They have been working diligently this spring building the new ice cream bar in addition to making extensive improvements to the restaurant and sports tavern both inside and out. Trail’s End, on Skiway Road across from the Sunday River South Ridge base lodge, is open year round, seven days a week.
Construction of Sundae River Scoops is nearly complete and the ice cream bar will serve Gifford’s ice cream, Oakhurst soft serve and a full seafood menu, including lobster, shrimp, scallops, clams and more. There are other grill options as well. Diners may eat on the outdoor deck, which has ample seating and views overlooking the mountains and ski trails. Food is also available for takeout.
The indoor Sports Tavern offers daily specials starting at $5, with $2 drafts 2 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. There are 25 beers on tap and a full arcade, pool tables, four dart lanes and more than 20 games including air hockey. The tavern has 16 large screen TVs with local channels and sports. “And yes, we listen to the games!” Dean Weeks said.
On Sunday, Trail’s End offers an all-you-can-eat brunch buffet with a full menu, complete with carving stations. There is also a make-your-own bloody Mary bar, and the first drink is only $1.
The restaurant on the second floor offers a more upscale menu with mountain views. In addition to the extensive menu, the restaurant pours six wines on tap and will offer six more in the near future. Wine is also available by the bottle and many of the draft beers are locally made in Maine.
Trail’s End opens at noon every day. To reach Sundae River Scoops or to order take out ahead of time, call 207-824-2221. The Restaurant and Tavern number is 824-2222.
