HOLDEN — The Ararat 12U team, which won the Cal Ripken New England Regional Tournament, is headed for the Cal Ripken World Series in Palm Beach, Fla.
It’s the first time a Maine team has competed in the Cal Ripken World Series. Players are from Harpswell, Bowdoinham, Topsham, Bowdoin and Richmond.
“For those that don’t know, this is a tremendous accomplishment and a once in a lifetime opportunity for this group of 12 to 13 year old baseball players,” Topsham Coach Ron Beal said. “This is the first time in Cal Ripken history that a team from Maine will take the field in the World Series. Most of these guys have been playing together for years and we are so proud of them, both on and off the field.”
With support from Masonic lodges, including Village Lodge in Bowdoinham, United Lodge in Brunswick and Ancient York Lodge in Lisbon, the Maine Masonic Charitable Foundation has contributed $15,000 to help defray travel expenses for the players and their families. The Foundation made the money available through its matching grants programs and as part of its Masons Assisting Communities initiative.
Masons Assisting Communities empowers Maine Masons to do even more in partnership with organizations and nonprofits in their communities. The Foundation is raising awareness of the expanded matching grants program through the MAC initiative and continues to encourage all community organizations and nonprofits that would like assistance to contact their local Masonic Lodge. “Mainers helping Mainers, that is what it’s all about,” said Susan Scacchi, executive director of the Maine Masonic Charitable Foundation. ”The foundation and local Masons were happy to be able to help this great group of kids and their families. The community has really shown its support and we are happy to be able to assist in getting the team and a few of their fans down to Florida to watch the team if not win the series, at least have a lot of fun.”
