Gardiner bridge work causes detours, but downtown shops are still open

GARDINER — The Bridge Street bridge is now closed for demolition and replacement, work that’s expected to take until the end of November. There are temporary new traffic lights at the intersection of Water and Winter streets, and the light at the intersection of Water and Church street will be once again be operational.
During the closure, the Church and Water street intersection will not be a four-way stop.
The only way to enter the Hannaford and Dunkin’ Donuts shopping area will be from Maine Avenue The Bridge Street access is exit only.
Downtown Gardiner businesses are remaining open, with the expiation of the A1 Diner, which will be closed during the road closure.
Residents are urged to make an extra effort to support small businesses, who are already affected by the pandemic. T
hose driving downtown are also urged to plan their route accordingly and use extra caution when taking alternate routes through neighborhoods and areas that may be unfamiliar.
