Map allows Mainers to find spring alewive runs

GARDINER — Upstream Cobbossee and Maine Rivers have created a Maine Alewife Trail Map to make it easier for people to see a a spring alewife run.
The list has places across the state to see this keystone species fight their way up a stream to a Maine lake to spawn the next generation. The organizations suggest the map, which shows locations and also has descriptions of each spot, be used in conjunction with a mapping program like Google maps, to find them more easily.
Alewives usually show up in Maine rivers in mid-May and are around through June.
“I invite you to visit a site, practice social distancing and see this miracle of nature,” said Dan Auclair, Upstream board member.
