Augusta and Waterville animal rescue nonprofits were among three to be awarded grants from Loyal Biscuit Co. recently.
Owner Heidi Neil created the Loyal Biscuit Co. Fenway Fund in 2019, named after her dog, to award grants to celebrate the Rockland-based company’s 10th year. Grants are funded by the proceeds of sales within their six retail locations and are awarded biannually to 501c3 Maine animal related organizations whose proposals are selected by a committee of Loyal Biscuit Co. employees.
The fund is a vital way for the Loyal Biscuit to support animal welfare within Maine communities by providing seed money for projects that will help better the lives of animals that often fall below funding availability.
The Loyal Biscuit recently committee selected their second round of applicants to receive grant funding for projects they feel best met the criteria of the fund, for a total donation of $10,000. The Fenway Fund has now provided over $21,000 to Maine animal – related 501(c)3 organizations.
Receiving awards are:
Humane Society Waterville Area of Waterville received a $1,300 grant to buy an ultrasound machine to help in the diagnoses of pregnancies for cats that arrive at the shelter. “We are so grateful for this grant. With kitten season fast approaching, this system will allow us to better identify pregnant cats, track pregnancies, identify potential issues and find appropriate fosters.” said Lisa Oakes, executive director of HSWA. “We’re thrilled to have been chosen by a local business we truly consider a partner.”
Maine Greyhound Placement Services of Augusta received a $6,700 grant to aid in the funding of a new fence- in area for their rescues. “Maine Greyhound Placement Service is incredibly grateful to Loyal Biscuit for creating the Fenway Community Fund and their ongoing support of local adoption groups,” said Drena Byers, a volunteer with MGPS. “This grant is a vital part of our project and will be used to redesign the fenced areas that the greyhounds spend time in at least four times each day. We will also be adding an emergency section in case we need to evacuate the greyhounds from the kennel. This redesign will ensure the safety of our adoptable greyhounds and also the volunteers that work tirelessly to care for them. We will begin groundbreaking in the spring due to the generosity and support of LBC.”
Underhound Railroad, a Damariscottae-based rescue organization, also was awarded a $2,000 grant for the creation of a website. This will allow them to have a functioning website to post available animals and accept online applications, helping to find homes for their rescues in a more timely manner then what their current resources allow.
