BRUNSWICK — The Pejepscot Genealogical Society will hold its next meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 5, in the Morrell room, Curtis Memorial Library, 23 Pleasant St.
Cheryl Willis Patten will present information about MOCA — the Maine Old Cemetery Association — its beginnings, its projects, and how the information the association has collected benefits genealogists. She will also discuss how the information one might find carved on gravestones, other than the usual vital statistics, can sometimes be helpful in enriching one’s family history. Cemeteries are delicate outdoor museums that contain the history of individuals and towns. They provide a wealth of information that may not be available elsewhere.
A member of the Association for Gravestone Studies and the cemetery association, Patten has been an advocate for cemeteries for many years. She chaired the 2011 AGS annual conference, based at Colby College in Waterville, and over the past two decades has held various offices with MOCA. She has participated in many cemetery preservation workshops and, until a year ago, chaired MOCA’s workshop committee. Retired from teaching and from state employment, Patten now has more time for tramping through cemeteries in Maine and in various other states and countries.
