Cleaves Oct. 5 performer at Brunswick church Concerts for a Cause

BRUNSWICK — Maine-raised, Texas-based singer-songwriter Slaid Cleaves will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Brunswick Unitarian Universalist Church, 1 Middle St.
The performance is art of the Concerts for a Cause series. Two-thirds of the net proceeds of the 2018-19 Concerts for a Cause series will be donated to two local charities — Tedford Housing and Oasis Free Clinics.
Cleaves started playing music as a teenager, inspired by artists like Bruce Springsteen and Johnny Cash. He quickly built a local fanbase in Portland. Cleaves rose to national prominence in 1997 upon the release of his national debut, “No Angel Knows,” and has achieved national success with his subsequent albums. In 1992, he was a winner at the Kerryville Folk competition.
Cleaves’s voice is a clear tenor with a hint of grit. The music of Cleaves is rooted in country and traditional folk songs, yet it is unusual enough to have held interest in a sea of singer/songwriters across the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s. He has combined his passion for folk songs, blues and traditional country music into an amalgamation of styles known as Americana.
