BRUNSWICK –The Joshua Chamberlain Civil War Roundtable guest speaker William Quigley will talk about “Better Angels in America’s Civil War” at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at the Curtis Memorial Library Morrell Room, 23 Pleasant St.
Quigley will share stories about the Rev. Benjamin Dorr, rector of Philadelphia’s Christ Church (Episcopal) and his eldest son, Capt. William White Dorr, who served with distinction during the Civil War.
Both are heroes of his book, “Pure Heart: The Faith of a Father and Son in the War for a More Perfect Union,” a story about “character, integrity, faith, forgiveness, atonement and the passions of the human heart in a world turned upside down.”
A teacher of history at Governor’s Academy in Byfield, Mass., Quigley discovered in Dorr’s collection letters and pencil-and-ink sketches of his son from the war front. Quigley brings to life the inspiring history of a father and son during one of the most turbulent times in the history of this country. The event is free and open to the public.
