BRUNSWICK — Maine State Music Theatre has joined forces with Curtis Memorial Library to present two special programs for young audiences Saturday, Dec. 1, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., in the Morrell Meeting Room of the library. (The snow date is Dec. 2, at the same times.) These programs are free and on a first-come, first-served basis, recommended for children up to third grade.
The 40-minute-long program will focus on the fairy tale, featuring readings from source material and live performances, video and audio from the new musical version by Marc Robin and artistic director Curt Dale Clark, who will lead the performers with youth services librarian Pam Jenkins and “Broadway World’s” Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold serving as narrators.
“Theater stimulates the imagination, leads to creative thinking in young people, and helps them shape moral values and learn important lessons,” said Clark, who has decades of experience directing young audience series before coming to Maine. He said his and Robin’s versions, which encourage audience interaction, are contemporary retellings of the source material, often with unlikely twists, and they are designed to embrace diversity and tolerance – all in an entertaining, engaging manner.
Before the performances, Curtis Library will make available reading lists and story and media materials for youngsters to borrow, and there is an MSMT study guide available online at msmt.org.
