LEWISTON — Androscoggin Valley Soil and Water Conservation District is offering an agricultural food safety question and answer session for producers to talk specifically about the final rule on produce safety. The session will be from 9 a.m. to noon, Thursday, Nov. 29, at 254 Goddard Road.
Despite the United States having one of the safest food supplies in the world, roughly 1 in 6 consumers get sick from preventable food-borne illness. The Food Safety Modernization Act is transforming the nation’s food safety system by shifting the focus from responding to foodborne illness to preventing it. The Food and Drug Administration has finalized seven major rules to implement FSMA.
This rule affects the standards for growing, harvesting, packing, and holding of produce for human consumption. This session will cover topics such as eligibility, crops, water quality testing, health and hygiene, compliance dates, manure and soil amendments, and farm food safety plans. This session is not a replacement for the Produce Safety Alliance Grower Training Course required by FSMA. Instead, it is an attempt to help local producers understand the changes that are to come with the implementation of FSMA.
