DRESDEN — Friends of Merrymeeting Bay will host a rare mud plant walk from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18, at Choice View Farm.
The walk will be led by Justin Schlawin, ecologist with the Maine Natural Areas Program.
Merrymeeting Bay is home to a dozen rare mud plants, some considered globally rare. This spectacular site, near the mouth of the Eastern River, was protected by FOMB in 2001 from development of a five-home subdivision. It was bought with money from Land for Maine’s Future, Maine Outdoor Heritage Fund, the North American Waterfowl Conservation Act, The Nature Conservancy and a variety of other grantors along with individual donations.
