FAIRFIELD — The Kennebec Montessori School will hold its annual open house and registration day from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 18, at the school at 38 Sheridan Drive.
All are invited to visit the school and learn more about the Montessori approach to early childhood and elementary education. Prospective parents and children will be able to explore the classrooms, try the hands-on materials, meet the teachers and talk to current parents about their experience.
KMS offers preschool, kindergarten and elementary programs, now through sixth grade. New registrations for 2017-18 will be accepted beginning on March 18. Parents are also encouraged to schedule a classroom observation by calling 207-453-6055.
The Montessori method, developed by Maria Montessori in the early 20th century, emphasizes intellectual and social development through the independent exploration of hands-on materials in multi-age classrooms. In the carefully prepared classrooms, there is “freedom within limits” that allows a child to learn at his or her own pace. Children have the opportunity for self-expression and discovery of the natural world, while learning respect for self, others and the environment.
Now celebrating its 40th year of operation, the school is the only nondenominational, independent elementary school in Central Maine and is accredited by the American Montessori Society. It is also rated as a Step 4 Quality Child Care Center by the Quality for ME childcare rating system and is an approved private school by the Department of Education.
KMS offers programs year-round from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in a rural setting on 14 acres of land just off I-95 and has been described as “a hidden treasure that needs to be seen.”
