AUGUSTA– During the Maine Education Association’s 90th Representative Assembly, members from across the state elected a new slate of leadership to take the association into the future.
The three new officers will join Amanda Cooper, MEA’s connection to the National Education Association as MEA’s NEA director. Cooper is a middle school teacher in Gorham and was elected into office last May.
President-elect Grace Leavitt is a Spanish Teacher in Cumberland-based School Administrative District 51; Vice President-elect Jesse Hargrove is a history teacher at Hermon High School; treasurer-elect Beth French is an elementary teacher in Belfast-based Regional School Unit 71.
MEA’s Representative Assembly is the largest democratic body of the association made up of educators elected by their local associations to represent their district. Those who are elected are delegates for their local association and are both teachers and support staff, higher education professors and support staff, retired educators and pre-service teachers from around the state. The delegates set the course of work for the association in the upcoming school year, discuss and take positions on key education issues, and elect new leadership.
Before being elected president, Leavitt served as MEA’s vice-president for the last six years. Those elected to the seats of president, vice president and treasurer serve two, three-year terms. The NEA director serves two, two-year terms. The newly-elected individuals will take office July 15.
