TURNER — Pete Angell graduated from Leavitt Area High School in 1978. Unsure of what he wanted to do, his brother suggested he investigate Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute (now Southern Maine Community College) and its degree program in plumbing.
Originally from Leeds, Angell followed his brother’s suggestion, and the Turner businessman has never looked back.
Immediately upon graduation from SMVTI, he was hired by a family plumbing business in Farmington. Angell remembers fondly riding with his elderly boss to and from jobs as an apprentice. The conversations and jobs they did were wonderful training for the young man.
Angell started his own plumbing operation in 1984, deciding Turner would be where he’d establish his home and business. Now after 34 years, he has begun a four to five-year process of turning the business over to his son, Cameron Angell.
Cameron, who also lives in Turner just down the road from his dad, graduated from Central Maine Community College in 2007 with a business degree. He has been working with his father since his high school years and is knowledgeable about plumbing and related fields. Angell said he is looking forward to “working for my son.” Cameron has recently earned several certifications, acquiring his LP gas certification in 2014. In the last six months, he has also received his journeyman oil burner and master plumber licenses.
Angell is confident his son will pick up the mind set that has kept Pete The Plumber a standard in the community they serve. Angell says he has always enjoyed the challenges presented almost daily in the trade. “It’s a challenge to keep abreast of the changes in technology,” he added.
Angell enjoys being able to correctly diagnose a problem and come up with a unique and proper fix. Ninety percent of the jobs they do are residential, and they try to stay within a 30-mile radius of Turner. They do not advertise being a 24-hour service, but in plumbing and heating businesses,one is always on call for clients.
“We want our customers to know that Pete The Plumber is continuing and that it is your local solution for residential service,” Angell declares. He and his staff work out of the main office on Route 4.
