WAYNE — Author Douglas Rooks will speak at Cary Memorial Library this month, and at Lithgow Library in Augusta in April.
Rooks will discuss and read from his new book “Rise, Decline and Renewal: The Democratic Party in in Maine,” recently published by Hamilton Books.
Cary Memorial Library will host Rooks at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 24. The library is at 17 Old Winthrop Road.
At 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 21,he will be at Lithgow, 45 Winthrop Street.
Both events are free and open to the public.
In “Rise, Decline and Renewal,” Rooks tells the story of the Maine Democratic Party, and how it rose from irrelevance with the election of Edmund Muskie in 1954. The party successfully challenged the ruling Republican Party, producing a model government in a state long perceived as a cultural and economic backwater. Leadership failures, however, led to diminished prosperity and political and institutional decline.
While the book focuses primarily on the evolution of the Democratic Party, it makes a strong case that only a vigorous two-party system based on competition rather than endless conflict can restore Maine state government to health.
Copies of his book, as well as his previous book “Statesman: George Mitchell and the Art of the Possible,” will be available for purchase and signing.
