GARDINER — Recently Boys & Girls Clubs Kennebec Valley alumnus Nathan Williams and his wife, Sarah, contacted the club to ask if it would host a fundraiser for Williams’ childhood best friend and fellow National Gaurdsman, whose 3-year-old daughter had just been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.
Club volunteers sprung into action, and the family and their National Guard friends began planning the event.
“The community support was more than I ever would have imagined,” said Sarah Williams. “We could not have done this without the support of Boys & Girls Club staff and space.”
The event, held Feb. 9 drew more than 300 people and raised $13,604 for the Churchill family.
Amici’s Cucina, 135 Main St., Waterville, donated the pasta dinner, and there were 100 silent auction items. Some 38 people enrolled as bone marrow donors.
The money will help the family defray travel costs to Boston and other incremental costs associated with treatments.
