WATERVILLE — Thomas College will offer its $10,000 Dirigo scholarship to one qualified high school student in each New England state high school beginning in 2018.
The Dirigo Award, named after Maine’s motto, “I lead,” was initiated in 2014 to recognize academic and cocurricular leadership among Maine high school students. Since then, the award has expanded to include high school students in each New England state (Maine, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, Massachusetts and New Hampshire). The students who win the award have demonstrated leadership, community service, and academic commitment, said a news release from the college.
The Dirigo Award gives the student $2,500 a year for up to four years of undergraduate study at Thomas College.
“We know that paying for college is difficult, and for some students and their families, a scholarship can make a world of difference,” said Provost Thomas Edwards. “That’s why we’ve decided to expand this award to qualified students in all of New England. Thomas focuses on the education of the whole student – and the Dirigo Award recognizes students who lead inside and outside the classroom.”
The Dirigo Award is an award to one student from every high school in all New England states who exemplifies leadership in their school and community. Recipients are nominated by their guidance or career office on behalf of the school by emailing the Thomas Admissions Office at admiss@thomas.edu. Nominations are due by Oct. 16.
“Success and leadership come in many ways – academic and professional. Dirigo tells students they can find that success at Thomas,” said Edwards.
