AUBURN – The Senior College in the Community program has presentations scheduled for Thursday, April 13, and Friday, April 14, at Auburn Public Library, 49 Spring St.
Both programs are free and open to the public,
Bill Frayer will discuss Elif Shafak’s Ted Talk, “The Revolutionary Power of Diverse Thought,” at 2 p.m. April 13 in the library’s Androscoggin Room.
A native of Turkey, novelist Shafak has experienced firsthand the devastation that a loss of diversity can bring, and she knows the revolutionary power of plurality in response to authoritarianism. The presentation will review and discuss this her talk, led by Frayer, a long-time Senior College instructor and former Central Maine Community College professor.
Elcha Buckman will present “Everything You’ve Always Wanted To Know and Ask About Mental Illness,” at 10 a.m. April 14, also in the Androscoggin Room.
Buckman will briefly talk about major psychiatric diagnoses and some treatments, and then open the floor to discussion. Bring all the questions you’ve wanted to ask or ever wondered about that relates to mental health and human behavior.
Buckman holds a Ph.D. and is certified in child, adolescent and family psychiatry, and has been a board certified practicing psychotherapist for 49 years.
Charles Plummer will address many aspects of addiction in a talk at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 20, in the Androscoggin Room.
Plummer taught in the Auburn school system, including 23 years as a principal. He will explain the process by which drug use can lead to dependence and addiction, and describe many types of addiction, including behavioral addiction. Plummer has Ph.D. in religious studies and metaphysics.
