WATERVILLE – Area residents and visitors may enjoy a day of cross-country skiing and other winter activities at Quarry Road Trails free of charge Dec. 10, Jan. 7 and Feb. 11.
The nordic ski trails are open all day throughout the season at 300 Quarry Road, with lighting on more than a mile of trail. A day ticket or season pass is required for use of the groomed ski trails. No ticket is necessary to use the snowshoe trails or other ungroomed and backcountry areas.
Each Community Ski Free Day has a focus of activities:
Dec. 10 offers a free Nordic day pass and free two-hour ski rental and ski clinics at 11 a.m and 1 p.m. on a short loop with man-made snow. Biking and snow shoeing will not be available with the current limited snowmaking loop.
Jan. 7 offers the free day pass on the Nordic ski trails as well as free snowshoes for tours on the snowshoe/ bike trails.
In addition to skiing on miles of groomed trails, the Feb. 11 event includes Winter Fun Day, with family-friendly activities between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The Welcome Center yurt will be open in January and February on weekends, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to provide ski rentals, free snowshoes to loan, snacks and information. Quarry Road Recreation Area is owned and operated by the city of Waterville Department of Parks and Recreation.
Quarry Road Trails’ snowmaking system ensures that the ski trails are covered even when there is not enough natural snowfall. The alpine trail, with a new rope tow, will be available at a minimal cost every Saturday from January to March.
The free ski days and Quarry Road Trails are supported through ski pass sales, donations, collaboration with partnering organizations, and contributions from annual sponsors.
