LEWISTON – The Friends of the Lewiston Public Library will feature a talk by Jeri Maurer, president of the Board of Directors of the Stanton Bird Club, at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, as part of their annual meeting.
The talk is free and open to the public, as is the friends meeting. The meeting is at 5:30 p.m., with the talk at 6 p.m. It will be at the library, 200 Lisbon St.
Maurer will speak on, “Thorncrag – A Celebration of Its 100-Year History,” and provide an overview of Thorncrag Nature Sanctuary, in Lewiston. Maurer will talk about the first gifts of land and how it was deeded, as well as what the land looked like in those early days and the connections to Bates College. She will also talk about what the Stanton Bird Club is doing to continue the original mission of stewardship and education.
Maurer has been leading school tour groups as a volunteer guide at Thorncrag since the early 1990s. She has hiked in many national parks and reserve lands across the U.S. and Canada, and retired in 2015 to focus on her passion for the outdoors and caring for the environment. This included taking on the role of volunteer president of the Stanton Bird Club after serving on its board since the early 2000s.
Books about Thorncrag and the Stanton Book Club will be available for sale after the talk, and all proceeds will go toward maintaining Thorncrag. Cash or personal checks only.
