Winthrop wins top boy, girl and team crowns in MVCC meet

AUGUSTA – Winthrop senior James Cognata and junior Haley Williams were the individual champions at the Mountain Valley Conference Cross-Country Championship, held Oct. 15 on a muddy 5k (3.1 mile) course at the University of Maine, Augusta.
The Rambler boys also finished first in the team results for the MVC team championship. The Rambler girls finished fourth, with Boothbay/Wiscasset winning the girls’ crown.
Cognata crossed the finish line in 18:14.8, followed by teammates Christopher Pottle (18:45.3), third, Jonathan Wagner (19.54.8), eighth, and Bennett Ross (20:19.9), 11th, for the first-place team trophy. Mount Abram’s Jeff Warnock was close on Cognata’s heels, finishing second in 18:23.1.
Williams (22.00.4) won the girls’ individual championship, crossing the finish line ahead of Madison’s Peyton Estes (22:35.1), who came in second. Rambler teammate Grace Drown (23:56.4) finished seventh in the girl’s race to earn team points.
Other top girls’ finishers were Madison’s Bryanna Hagopian (22:56.7), third; Monmouth’s Allyson Lewis (23:40.8), fourth; Dirigo’s Brooke Buotte (23:48.9), fifth; and Richmond’s Breonna Dufresne (23:55.10). Boothbay-Wiscasset won the championship with three runners in the top 10: Laura Chapman (24:08.5), eighth; Julia Truesdell (24:28.1), ninth; and Emily Gilliam (25:34.1) in the 10 spot.

Other boy’s top finishers were Spruce Mountain’s Abram Geissinger (18:46.6), fourth; Monmouth’s Brosnan Comeau (19:20.9), fifth; Richmond’s Benjamin Fournier (19:35.40), sixth; Boothbay-Wiscassett’s Bryan Gagon (19:45.0), seventh; Richmond’s Max Viselli (20.07.80), ninth; Carrabec’s Desmond Robinson (20:08.60), 10th.
