NEW GLOUCESTER — The Friends of the New Gloucester Public Library annual book and bake sale will be from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, at the New Gloucester Community Building, 381 Intervale Road.
Friends members may attend a preview sale from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5.
The Friends book sale is a tradition that dates back to 1960, when discarded books were placed on sale at the library in order to generate income. In the Friends book and bake sales of today, members of the community come together to visit and nibble on homemade cookies and bars while browsing the selections and getting a jump on holiday shopping.
The public is invited to donate books to the sale by bringing them to the New Gloucester Public Library, 379 Intervale Road, from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, or to the community center 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 5. Limit donations to two cartons or four grocery-sized bags. Containers will not be returned, and library staff will not be available to help unload donations. All donations should be clean and free of odors, mold and mildew. The Friends are not accepting Reader’s Digest Condensed books, encyclopedias, textbooks, magazines, VHS tapes, DVDs or CDs.
The Friends of New Gloucester Public Library is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, that helps fund library programming, buy books and other materials, and sponsor the library’s free museum and park passes. Besides the book and bake sale, recent project include hosting a raised-bed vegetable garden class, supporting summer reading programming and book clubs, landscaping library grounds, and participating in town events, such as the Community Fair and Tiny Timber tree lighting. The Friends received the town’s Spirit of America Foundation Award in 2019, for commendable community service.
