WINTHROP – Winthrop Boy Scout Troop 604 will support a special cause when it hosts a Holiday Craft Fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, at the Augusta Armory, 179 Western Ave., Augusta.
The proceeds from the spaces, tables and raffles will be split evenly between the troop and Jacobsen Syndrome Research Lab. Admission to the craft fair is free.
“We are a small troop with a big heart,” said Scoutmaster Samantha Doody-Remington. “Please come support and join us for your holiday shopping. Stop by the food table for a drink, something to eat and to say hello.”
JS is a rare contiguous gene syndrome caused by partial deletion of the long arm of chromosome 11. Also known as 11Q. JS affects approximately 1 in 100,000 births. Doody-Remington’s nephew, an Eagle Scout, has a five-year-old, Carl, with JS. Carl has issues with vision, speech and language. As well as Paris-Trousseau which includes a low platelet count and impaired platelet functions.
“Carl is a happy and loving little boy,” said Doody-Remington. “He loves to dance. He will be stopping by the craft fair.
“When Carl was first born my daughter read that the Grossfeld Research Lab was low on funding to continue research. That is when our family started making and selling crafts at craft fairs. We send a portion of the proceeds from the craft fairs to the Pediatric Cardiology Jacobsen Syndrome Research Lab in San Diego, California. The troop will have a food table selling meals, snacks, drinks and more. Those proceeds will go to the troop. At the craft fair, the Scouts will assist vendors and crafters setting up, tearing down their spaces and carrying and lifting items to their vehicles, as well as helping out customers as needed.
Kennebec Valley District Executive Michael Perry will also be on hand to help with new registrations into Cub Scouting and Scouts BSA for those interested in joining.
