LEWISTON – Lewiston Public Library has scheduled a variety of programs for kids and teens in the coming weeks, some of which will be ongoing.
The events, unless otherwise noted, are free, open to the public, and at the library, 200 Lisbon St.
They include:
Children’s author Hudda Ibrahim, “Lula Wants to Wear a Badge,” and “What Color is My Hijab?” will be at the library 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 15, in Callahan Hall. The event will include activities to engage children, sambusas and tea. Ibrahim will read from her books, interact with the kids and share the inspiration behind her books and her publishing company, Diverse Voices Press; 50 copies of her books will be given away, first-come, first-served.
A monthly program for teens 13-19, “Magic: The Gathering Club,” begins 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, and will be held the second Thursday of every month in the teen space on the second floor. Magic is a tabletop collectible card game, with more than 20,000 unique cards. Library staff and volunteers will be available to teach new players and coach developing ones. Players are encouraged to bring their own decks for casual dueling. A limited number of decks are available to borrow for gameplay. Free beginner decks are available for new players to keep.
A manga drawing contest for teens is taking place until Oct. 31. Submissions may be made online via Google form or in-person at the library’s second floor Reference Desk. Art will be displayed in the LPL teen space and shared on library social media for voting from Nov. 9 to Nov. 23. Two winners will receive a pack of manga-making supplies as a prize. Teen artists can submit one piece of manga art to join the contest. The two contest categories are original art and fan art. Participants must be between the ages of 13 and 19 and live or go to school in Lewiston Public Library’s service area of Lewiston, Auburn or Minot. Throwback Thursday Movie events start Oct. 27. These events will showcase movies from previous decades to introduce new generations to movie classics. The October movie is the 1993 Disney movie “Hocus Pocus.”
The movies will be from 4 to 6 p.m. and will feature a movie open to all age groups. To find out which movie will be featured each month, visit lplonline/events.
