RANGELEY — More than 100 community members and visitors alike gathered June 16 to honor Tom “Ball” Danforth, recognizing him for his contributions to the Rangeley community.
Danforth began his career 44 years ago as the athletic director for Rangeley Lakes Regional School — home to students in grades kindergarten through Grade 12, all under one roof. He also started his musical career at that time, by providing entertainment for the community.
On June 16, 1992, Craig and Sharon Sargent hired Danforth to play at their establishment — the Saddleback Inn; 30 years later, they hosted this private recognition party to celebrate not only their good fortune for having Danforth play at their many events and establishments but also to recognize all of his contributions to the school-based community, such as his commitment to youths and adults through his music.
The event started with Crystal Sargent’s reading notes from various individuals impacted by Danforth, followed by the presentation of a guitar and coat — bought years ago at a charity auction — by George Crosson, a local craftsman.
Crosson is building an encasement for the memorabilia to forever hang at Sarge’s Sports Pub & Grub’s Hall of Fame wall as its first local inductee.
Many others individuals acknowledged the impact Danforth had on them throughout the years. Danforth then spoke about his appreciation for the community he lived in and how he was humbled by the experience and acknowledgement.
