RANGELEY – Antarctic guide and Mount Everest climber Ed Webster will discuss the Antarctica expedition of Ernest Shackleton at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, at the Rangeley Public Library, 7 Lake St.
The talk is free and open to the public, but registration is encouraged.
Webster’s lecture documents Shackleton’s life and times, as well as his leadership of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, 1914-17. The talk includes original photographs taken by the team’s cameraman, Australian photographer Frank Hurley. The talk also includes photos of the crossing of Suth Georgia by Webster’s Mount Everest partner, Stephen Venables, one of just a few explorers to duplicate the climactic end to Ernest Shackleton’s Incredible Journey.
Shackleton’s expedition is one of history’s most astounding survival stories, a tale overflowing with almost unbelievable privation and pluck. While the expedition went horribly wrong, because of Shackleton’s leadership not a man was lost.
